Here it is: The very first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, the misfits in space movie from Super director James Gunn. And it’s hilarious.
The Cosmic Avengers, so to speak, are lead by Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) as Star lord and include Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as Gamora and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Their smallest and largest members, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, are voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively.
Writer and director James Gunn promised we’d get something else “cool” very soon and it was heard from insiders that he was holding back any reveals on the footage front – as much as he could – until the special effects were up to where he wants them to be since the entire film is based in space and two of the five main characters are entirely digitally animated. By the look of the trailer it looks like it was a good decision.
About the trailer, it begins with an introduction to all of the team members one by one and show what their reputation is in the cosmos (hint: it’s not much). But one of the important shots is at the end of the trailer we see a brief shot of The Collector, and those who may have seen Thor : The Dark World might remember him making an appearance at the end credit scene. The Collector is a rather important being in the Marvel Comics universe, and one of the oldest. His real name is Taneleer Tivan and he’s the last surviving member of his species, one of the first intelligent races formed after the creation of the universe. That fact made him worthy enough to be granted immortality from “Death” – the character for which Thanos (see: The Avengers) aims to serve and impress.
(SPOILERS For Thor : The Dark World)
In the movie In the aftermath of the great battle with the Dark Elves, Sif and Volstagg bring “The Aether” – the power source Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) attempted to destroy the universe with – to The Collector for safe keeping. When questioned by The Collector why they are giving HIM the Aether, the Asgardians reveal that with the Tesseract locked in Odin’s vault, it would be unwise to keep two “Infinity Stones” in one place. Upon the Asgardians’ departure, The Collector states that he has “one down, five to go” – referring to the remaining Infinity Stones yet to be collected.
Infinity Stones are breadcrumb trails along the road for more fantastical film properties like Doctor Strange and The Inhumans (Both of which are rumored), as the mystical powers of each stone could be used to empower such heroes (Doc Strange powered by a soul stone, for example).
But all this is very far ahead, what is not far is August 1st, 2014. The release Date of Guardians of the Galaxy.
