The best sport during the summers to counter heat is the good old water fight with good old water guns! Only adding more sophistication to the above was the idea behind the creation of the super amazing Gatling water gun with a holding capacity of 10 liters of water and a freaking 40 foot firing range, not to mention six barrels to fire from! Feel the jitters already? This is the invention by a 27 year old British boy Alex Bygrave.
It took 55 different household objects and a prolonged 50 hours into designing and building this shooter from scratch! “I had to first break down the mechanics of how the Gatling gun worked, and then build it up using a mix of all sorts of components,” states Alex.
An example of how he incorporated daily use objects and improvised is the windscreen wiper motor that he got from black cab, “For example, I used a black cab’s windscreen wiper to provide the rotary motion of the pistol and laser cut mechanics to create an intermittent barrel rotation.” This was not only ideal for the project because it possessed high gearing but was easy and inexpensive to get second hand.
“Standard plumbing pipes and fittings were used wherever possible, so that as much of the pistol could be made from stuff in your local DIY store,” he added.
Sugru, a self-setting rubber was utilized with other parts to form custom valves, injectors, and pistons that are vital to the Gatling motion especially to produce the colored water jets. In order for the gun to fire water over long distances, Alex used a carbon dioxide welding canister to pressure two large fire extinguishers. In addition a minuscule amount of food dye is added in the barrels to make sure that the water shoots out in a rangoli of colors.
The entire project’s construction was undertaken and sponsored by the makers of Sugru, declaring, “we love testing the limits of what Sugru can do. Which got us thinking. With all of this Sugru, and these amazing people, could we create the world’s coolest water pistol?” on their website. As per Sugru’s production assistant Jon Radclyfe, “the pistol weighs an absolute tonne but works like a dream.”
This definitely is the water gun of the century, technologically so advance that the co-founder of the company embarks playfully, “Water pistols are awesome. But what if they were even more awesome-erer?” Alex and a colleague then build the pistol and fire colored water all over their colleagues to give the answer.
